Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) is the flagship of Estonian engineering, technology and architecture education. Founded in 1918, TalTech is a research-based university offering education and research in engineering, natural sciences, information technology, business and maritime studies.
In the PRE-ACTIVER project, TalTech is represented by the Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) Research Group from the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture. The Department brings together research groups active in architecture, building structures, construction processes, nearly zero energy and nearly zero carbon buildings, structural and fluid mechanics, road construction, geodesy, water and environmental engineering.
The nZEB Research Group was established in 2012 and builds on TalTech’s long-standing expertise in building physics and HVAC. Its main competencies include building physics, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, indoor climate and the energy performance of buildings. The group focuses on technical solutions and calculation methods for high-performance and zero-energy buildings, as well as the renovation of the existing building stock.
TalTech contributes to the project with strong expertise in climate chamber experiments, hygrothermal modelling, material property measurements and large-scale experimental testing. The nZEB Research Group has access to building physics climate chambers and test facilities that allow façade systems and building components to be studied under both controlled extreme conditions and real outdoor climate conditions. This expertise supports the development, validation and performance assessment of the ActiVer façade system in different climatic scenarios.
TalTech’s contribution to the project is coordinated by Martin Talvik. Various project activities involve Kristina Vilba (measurement of hygrothermal properties), Sissi Margaret Sepp (hygrothermal modelling & climate chamber testing), Matthias Siirak (construction of test walls & climate chamber testing), Mattias Põldaru (logger development and data management), Targo Kalamees and Simo Ilomets.
